Every abbreviation and acronym in your dissertation must be spelled out in full the first time it appears, with the abbreviation in parentheses immediately after. After that, you can use the abbreviation alone. "The Individualized Education Program (IEP) was reviewed. The IEP included..." This isn't a suggestion — it's a universal requirement across APA, MLA, Chicago, and every institutional style guide.
Why do committees care so much? Because your dissertation will be read by people outside your immediate field. Your chair knows what PLCs and RTI and SES mean. The external committee member studying organizational leadership might not. The form-and-style reviewer checking your formatting almost certainly doesn't. And your dissertation lives in a database forever, where future readers from any discipline might find it.
